455 SQUADRON BEAUFIGHTERS ATTACKING SHIPPING OFF NORWAY, 1944.

"The type of work carried out by this squadron is akin to that of the Viking -
short, sharp swoops across the sea by a compact, well armed force"

Wing Commander Jack Davenport AC DSO DFC* GM MID - C.O. 455 Squadron

Overall print size: 39" wide x 25" high.
Image size: 35" wide x 19" high.

Part of an anti-shipping Strike Wing of Coastal Command, No. 455 Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force, became highly skilled in the role of sweeps along the French, Belgium and Dutch coasts.

In October 1944 it was assigned full-time to strikes against shipping in Norwegian waters. At this stage the Germans were transferring troops and equipment form the occupied countries to help counter the grave situations which had developed elsewhere in Europe. The objective of the anti-shipping squadrons in the region was to halt such traffic.

In the open sea several Beaufighter aircraft could divide the attention of shipbourne gunners, and attack ships with rocket and cannon simultaneously.

This classic 1969 painting by Ray Honisett shows No. 455 Squadron operating in such a situation in the North Sea.

Reproduced from the original oil on canvas housed within the Australian War Memorial.

Each print has been individually signed by artist Ray Honisett and three 455 Sqn aircrew:

The signatures:
Wing Commander JACK N DAVENPORT AC DSO DFC & Bar GM MID - CO 455 Sqn RAAF
Flying Officer IVOR M GORDON DFC - Navigator 455 Sqn RAAF
Wing Commander A LLOYD WIGGINS DSO DFC MID - Flight Commander 455 Sqn RAAF
